Remembering Jonia Mendonca Guterres

At this sad time following Jonia's tragic drowning it is hard to know how best we can show our support for her family.  Jonia is survived by her parents and five siblings who range in age from kindergarten to secondary school aged.  After conferring with contacts in East Timor about cultural practices and sensitivities as well as regarding what is needed most, the possibilities below are suggested.

A.  Those wishing to make a donation towards the education of Jonia's five surviving siblings can do so through the Blair Forster Memorial Trust in the following ways:

1. Through www.cafonline.org (Charities Aid Foundation).  Type 'Blair Forster Memorial Trust' in the search.  In 'Instructions' write "For Jonia". Or click here to be taken directly to the relevant page.
2. By cheque to either the HK or UK trust (see details below).  Write "For Jonia" on the back of the check..

 
It should be noted that donations for the family through BFMT will be used for the payment of the five surviving children's primary and secondary educations.  Should donations exceed the amount necessary to put her five siblings through primary and secondary school, the excess would be used to sponsor the education of other primary or secondary school students in East Timor.
 
On average, the cost of a child's education in East Timor is US$50 (government) and US$100 (private) per annum.  We can therefore make a substantial difference in their lives for a relatively modest amount. 

B.  The internet in East Timor is erratic and expensive.  Therefore, the BFMT is trying to organize a CD or DVD and a 'real' book of remembrances for the family.  These will be collated by Linda and Ann Green and taken to East Timor by John and Ann Green in December when they go to there to select students for scholarships.  Contributions are most welcome and we would be most grateful for help with the CD/DVD.
